Licence Terms

Last updated 9 October 2026

These terms are the licence agreement for the Leafbind desktop application, between you and Software Design & Consulting GmbH, the company that makes it ("we"). They cover both the free trial and a bought licence. Where the law gives you more than they do, the law applies.

1. Who we are

Software Design & Consulting GmbH, Aufkirchner Straße 25 a, 82069 Hohenschäftlarn, Germany. Full company details are in the imprint. For anything about a licence or an order, write to support@leafbind.app.

2. Buying a licence

The store is not open yet. When it opens, you buy Leafbind from Lemon Squeezy (Link, LLC, formerly Lemon Squeezy LLC, Salt Lake City, USA), which sells it as our authorised reseller and merchant of record. The purchase itself — payment, tax, your invoice and the sales contract — is between you and Lemon Squeezy, under its Buyer Terms. Your right to use the software is between you and us, under this page.

The price, and any tax that applies where you live, is shown at checkout before you pay. Every purchase is a single payment. Nothing renews automatically, and there is no subscription. What happens if you want your money back is on the refund policy page.

3. What a licence gives you

A personal, perpetual licence to use Leafbind, issued in your name. You may install and use it on any computer you use yourself; there is no activation and no limit on installations, because the licence belongs to you rather than to a machine. Each person who writes with Leafbind needs a licence of their own, so please don't give copies of yours to other people.

Three years of updates. Your licence covers every feature release first published within three years of your purchase, and every fix to those releases, with no end date. After the three years nothing switches off: the version you have keeps working, and keeps receiving its fixes. You simply stop receiving new feature releases.

Renewing is optional. An update renewal extends your update period by a further three years, counted from the end of your current period rather than from the day you renew, so renewing late costs you nothing.

Passing a licence on. If you want to give your licence to someone else, write to us and we will reissue it in their name. You must then stop using it yourself.

4. Your licence file

We email your licence to the address on your order. Each licence is signed by a person rather than issued automatically, so it may not arrive the moment you pay; the time we commit to is stated at checkout.

The licence is checked on your own computer, never by us, and Leafbind works offline. Keep the email. If you lose the licence, write to us with your order number and we will send it again.

5. The free trial

A trial runs for 60 days from the day you ask for it, with every feature and without payment details. One trial is issued per email address in any twelve months; we may issue more at our discretion, for example when you ask for more time.

When a trial ends, Leafbind still opens, shows and exports your work, but it stops editing until you activate a licence. Your manuscripts are never locked away from you.

6. Your work

Everything you write with Leafbind is yours. Your manuscripts stay as ordinary files on your own disk; we claim no rights in them, and we never receive them. Please keep backups: Leafbind is built to protect your work, but no application replaces a copy kept somewhere else.

7. AI features

Leafbind's AI features are optional and switched off by default. If you turn them on, you use your own account and API key with a provider you choose — currently Anthropic or OpenRouter. The text a feature needs is sent from your computer directly to that provider, under your agreement with them; we never receive it. We do not control the provider's service, its output or its charges, and every suggestion it makes is yours to accept or reject.

8. What you may not do

You may not remove or work around the licence check, sell or distribute copies of Leafbind or of licence files, or use a licence issued to someone else. You may decompile or reverse-engineer the software only as far as the law permits regardless of these terms (in Germany, § 69e UrhG).

9. Warranty and liability

Leafbind is in early access: authors use it on real manuscripts, but it is still being built and may contain defects. Your statutory rights as a buyer, including those under your purchase from Lemon Squeezy, are not limited by these terms.

We are liable without limitation for damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under the German Product Liability Act, and where we have given a guarantee. For slight negligence we are liable only where we breach an obligation that is essential to the contract and on which you may rely, and then only for the damage that was typical and foreseeable when the licence was granted. Beyond that, liability for slight negligence is excluded.

The free trial costs nothing, so for it we are liable only for intent and gross negligence, and for injury to life, body or health.

For lost data, our liability is limited to what it would cost to restore that data from backups kept in the usual way.

10. Law

German law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live. If you are a merchant, the courts of Munich have jurisdiction.

11. Changes

If we change these terms, the change applies to licences bought and trials started after it. A licence you already hold keeps the terms it was granted under. The date at the top of this page says which version you are reading; write to us for an earlier one.
